The Video Painting Competition
The Open Gallery is launching a competition to find a new video artist to join the Artscape Project in an ongoing commission for video paintings. The competition is open to all graduating students and Postgraduate Film & Video students from Art Colleges across the UK. Background The origins of the Artscape Project can be found in 2001 when the first video paintings were shot by Hilary Lawson, a philosopher and documentary film maker, in an attempt to escape the limitations of the traditional video narrative. Subsequently, a collective of artists, including William Raban, Sanchita Islam, Nina Danino, Tina Keane, and Isabelle Inghilieri, was formed to develop the video painting medium. The Open Gallery exhibits internationally and Artscape Project Collections have been presented in major London venues including The Hayward Gallery, The ICA and SKETCH. Video paintings are filmed in a single take with a stationary camera. They contain no edits or subsequent manipulation. Video paintings show the world in real time. The video painting is non-narrative. There is no dialogue, no sound. In contrast to the film and video tradition which has been dominated by the provision of meaning and understanding, the video painting aims to escape our cultural and perceptual closures, freeing the viewer to play in the openness of the image. Brief
1. Identify your subject - look for layers of movement and abstraction.
2. Set up your tripod and camera with a fixed frame. 3. Video paintings are between 4 and 20 minutes in length. 4. NO camera movement, NO editing. Competition
Competition ShortlistFrom the initial applicants, 10 artists will be shortlisted by the Open Gallery and announced in September 2009. The work of these artists will be exhibited in a prominent exhibition at a high profile London venue in October 2009. The selected works by the shortlisted artists will become a unique collection for this exhibition, which will be promoted nationally. Final Selection The shortlisted artists will be asked to present a proposal to the Artscape Project’s founding artist and Open Gallery curator, Hilary Lawson, and a panel of judges, who will select the overall winner. Proposals at this stage will outline the artist’s aims as a video artist within the Artscape Project. The Open Gallery will be looking for an original and distinctive proposal by an artist whose unique vision will be an asset to the Artscape Project into the future. Competition Prize The chosen artist will be rewarded with a place on the Artscape Project, in an ongoing paid commission for video paintings, represented by the Open Gallery. They will go on to develop video paintings, exhibited within group collections and unique Individual Collections. They will also receive a prize of £500 to help launch and support the production of their video projects. Submissions
