Open Gallery | Jeu de Paume

18 October 2016 - 15 January 2017

Open Gallery has loaned two works within Jasmina Metwaly’s video painting series ‘Remarks on Medan (Tahrir version)’ to the Jeu de Paume for a much anticipated exhibition curated by Georges Didi-Huberman, entitled ‘Uprisings’. These two pieces ‘Tahrir Square: Cut-Skin’ and ‘Tahrir Square: Metro vent’ form part of a wider body of work filmed during the Egyptian revolution of 2011.

Unlike sensationalised reportage from the time, Metwaly’s motionless camera exposes the inevitability of change, finding new patterns and details otherwise concealed within the chaos. The series ‘remarks’ upon the dual meaning of ‘Medan’ and reveals the transition from square to battlefield as it plays upon the artist’s role as both commentator and activist.

Opening at The Jeu de Paume, Paris on 17th October 2016 Metwaly will be showing alongside other high-profile artists throughout history including

Roberto Rossellini, Francisco Goya, Gustave Courbet, Victor Hugo, Honoré Daumier, André Devambez, James Ensor, Félix Valotton, George Orwell, Jack London, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Gerda Taro, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Pablo Picasso, Mikhaïl Romm, Frederick Griffith, Sergei Eisenstein, Lang, Charlie Chaplin, John Heartfield, George Grosz, Bertolt Brecht, Walter Benjamin, Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Resnais, Chris Marker, Glauber Rocha, Peter Watkins, Artavazd Pelechian, Béla Tarr, Artur Aristakisian, Sylvain George, Sigmar Polke, Harun Farocki, Jean-Luc Moulène, Pedro G. Romero, Jalal Toufic, Abou Naddara amongst others.

‘Uprisings’ has been curated into five different themes; elements; gestures; words; conflicts and desires. As with Didi-Huberman’s previous exhibition ‘Atlas,’ ‘Uprisings’ is based on his ongoing historical and theoretical research as well as his series of publications entitles ‘The Eye of History’. Didi-Huberman’s interest focuses on the dual aspects of aesthetical representation and of political representation

A 432-pages catalogue will be published for the exhibition. Coedition Jeu de Paume / Gallimard, 300 illustrations (approx), available in English and in French, €39. Texts by Georges Didi-Huberman, Judith Butler, Marie-José Mondzain, Toni Negri, Nicole Brenez
