This year at HowTheLightGetsIn 2015, Open Gallery presents “Traces of Dreams”.

Since 2001 Open Gallery have pioneered the medium of video painting – dedicated to the avoidance of narrative closure. Shot with a stationary camera, a fixed lens and presented without any sound or subsequent editing, video paintings are presented in long form thematic series.

Although individually titled video paintings are autonomous pieces, it is within the context and complexity of the series – typically including twenty to forty video paintings - that the medium represents a challenge to the narrative traditions of film and video art. The series do not loop, but are played out in an order determined by the artists and which gradually shifts and evolves.

Open Gallery will be presenting a unique collection of work throughout the festival, with featured artists Isabelle Inghilleri, Gabrielle Le Bayon, Sanchita Islam and Alexandre Bettler. These works sustain a moment in the present and the real, leaving the future distant and open. Mediating between the British coastline, volcanic rock and urban nightscapes, there is something otherworldly and fantastical at play. Freed from the constraints of language and meaning, we are led to re-discover the fractal richness within our everyday visions of the world.
